New Mercedes S-Class Coupé reaches the trademark office

The reality is that two-door cars don't sell well. But coupes and convertibles have always been niche, and in an SUV world, we can't imagine consumer preferences changing significantly. That's why the SLC, the S-Class Coupé/Convertible and the AMG GT Convertible are dead. In addition, the C-Class and the E-Class Coupé/Convertible have been combined in the new CLE. Do you want a large Benz with two doors?

In addition to the AMG GT Coupé and the CLE Coupé, there could soon be another S-Class Coupé. Two trademark applications filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office show a pair of two-door luxury cars, one representing an AMG and the other a Maybach. Revealing images spotted by the car and driver on the EUIPO's website show the model with the double M logo, which features a split rear window. The design at the rear is reminiscent of the oddly shaped Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept.

But this is where it gets even more complicated. The trademarks applied for on January 8, 2025 do not come from Mercedes-Benz itself. Instead, the Swiss company Robu Aktiengesellschaft has registered the two S-Class Coupés with the EUIPO. Almost four years ago, the same company applied for the design of what would later become the Bussink GT R SpeedLegend, a radical AMG GTR that was transformed into a speedster by HWA.

Even though the idea of a large Benz coupe is tempting, building a business case seems complicated. However, as part of the newly founded Mythos series of ultra-expensive, limited-edition Mercedes models, such a car could make perfect sense. The AMG PureSpeed is a roofless SL63 with a Formula 1-inspired halo and an unnamed price tag, so it must be obscenely expensive.

Last year, the Spanish magazine Motor.es published prototype photos of a camouflaged Mercedes coupé with a split rear window. Perhaps the car that is now registered as a trademark was hidden under the camouflage of the prototype. Be that as it may, a coupé derived from the S-Class is apparently being planned, either by Mercedes or by a third party.

Mercedes S-Class Coupé trademark application

If the star wants to cancel the rear doors of the S-Class W223, a coupé with the Mythos brand will cost a fortune. In a sea of crossovers and SUVs, we're all in favour of another coupe, especially because Mercedes has a decades-long tradition of producing desirable two-door cars. It would be a fitting farewell for the venerable V12, as its days are numbered in the face of increasingly stringent emissions regulations and the brand's EV push.
